QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

1.         What is our plan for building?

Currently, our Master Site Plan includes the following…

- additional office space & meeting rooms

- new classrooms for the Day School & youth ministries

- expanded on-site parking

- improved site grading & storm water detention

- expanded front entry & gathering area

- multi-purpose room to accommodate wide variety of gatherings & activities

2.         When will this building program begin?

Pending village approval, we anticipate breaking ground for Phase 1 in late 2008 or early 2009 with expected project completion in 12 – 18 months.

3.         Will these plans occur all at once or in phases?

We believe that even with generous support of the appeal, our project will require a 2 phase approach over a 3 - 5 year time frame.

4.         What will these plans cost our congregation?

Our architect has estimated our overall construction costs to be approximately $8 million. After a general contractor is hired and we know the financial results of “A Time To Build Up”, we will be better able to define each phase & the associated costs.

5.         Can we afford to take such a bold step?

We can’t afford not to take this step! If we do not “Build Up” through expansion of facilities, we will limit our ability to respond effectively to ministry, not only with existing members, but especially with those whom God is yet to reach with the good news of His love in Christ.

6.         How is this appeal different from the prior appeal for a new Parking Lot?

The most recent appeal, called “Step Off The Curb” addressed 3 needs: a new sanctuary sound system, new Outreach staff and a new parking lot. The first two needs (sound system and staff) were fully funded and continue to be in use/existence here at Atonement. The plans for the new, larger parking lot were scrutinized by the Village of Barrington, who then asked for drastic modifications. Incorporating all the changes reduced the amount of parking so much that it was deemed by church leaders at the time to not be a responsible use of funds. We are now bringing a master site plan to the Village that includes a new parking lot with much needed additional parking spaces.

7.         Where does this project stand with the Village of Barrington?

All plans under consideration fall under our current zoning of R2 with some reasonable requests for variances. We have hired attorney Tom Hayward of Bell, Boyd & Lloyd to represent us in proceedings with the Village & fully expect approval of our plans within a reasonable time frame.

8.         How does my gift to this appeal affect my annual giving to Atonement?

Your commitment to the capital appeal is separate from your annual stewardship commitment. Any gift to “A Time to Build Up” is over and above your annual stewardship giving. The expenses of the annual operating budget are ongoing and basic for our church’s present ministry. Your gift to this capital appeal will update/build church facilities, which in turn, will grow ministries.

9.         May I give something other than cash? What about stocks, or other gifts?

Of course! For many people, this is the best (and smartest) way to give. Giving stocks or securities or other appreciated assets as a charitable donation is beneficial to you and the church.  See separate Giving Guide for ideas.

10.   What if my financial situation changes or I move before the three year giving period is over?

At any time, your commitment may be increased, decreased, extended or canceled by notifying the Atonement church office. Even if you move, please consider honoring your commitment to “A Time To Build Up”.

11.   Who is involved in this appeal and how is it organized?

Our Kairos & Associates consultant, Rev. David Misenheimer, is guiding our efforts. We have organized our Capital Appeal into 10 different teams with over 30 people serving in team leadership positions & an additional 50 people participating in various other capacities on these teams.   We expect this number to increase as the program unfolds.  Please contact any of us if you would like to participate on an appeal team.

12.   If I have additional questions, whom should I contact?

Please feel free to contact any member of the Appeal Advisory Team for answers to your questions or send an e-mail to Capital Team.
