meeting/classroom needs
- Improving the grading and drainage on
our site
- Building the attractive tower to the west of the
Gathering Place

of the north terrace outside the Gathering Place

mill-work reductions in less visible areas

What's Next?
Spring 2010 - What's Happening Now?
First of all, we are on schedule to receive
our June Occupancy Permit and our project is on time and within
budget! The roofing on the addition is now watertight which gives the
interior build out the full green light to proceed without interruption
due to inclement weather.
Now clearly visible, the tower cross has been
installed and looks great. Once the aluminum framing, glass and
back-lighting is in place, it will really look impressive.
The exterior brick masonry and associated
window installation is complete as is the stone masonry on the
tower. The remaining stonework (on the terrace), drywall, mechanicals,
electrical and plumbing on both levels are proceeding on schedule with
the kitchen equipment to be reinstalled shortly thereafter.
Floor tile and carpets have been selected and
ordered.
Inside the sanctuary, fellowship hall and
other areas, the installation of the fire sprinkler system is also
nearing completion.
As spring approaches we can look forward to
the reduction of the dirt piles along Lake Cook Road as the earth work
is resumed to make ready for the parking lot, final sidewalk work and
landscaping.

Press Release
Atonement
Lutheran Church - Dedication and Celebration
Barrington, IL – August 26, 2010 – Lutheran Church of
the Atonement is pleased to announce its grand opening and dedication
celebration for its newly renovated facility at 909 E. Main Street in
Barrington. The celebration will take place on Sunday, September 12, and
continue with scheduled events during the following week. All are open to the entire community.
Barrington area residents and visitors have
undoubtedly noticed the amazing transformation of the appearance of the church,
as they approach downtown Barrington from the east. The church was expanded and renovated to provide new,
modern spaces for its ministry programs, including its mid-week youth
gatherings and its day school, as well as adding parking areas and
landscaping. Most prominent in the
new facility is the large, welcoming “Gathering Place” adjacent to the church
entrance and the outdoor patio area visible from Main Street.
“We are delighted to have this new space available for
our church’s ministries,” said Senior Pastor Don Wink. “Atonement is a place where all are
welcome and we feel that we are now better equipped to host youth, teens and
adults who are looking for a church home.”
The celebration begins at
9:15am on Sunday, September 12, with live music and a dedication ceremony,
followed by an indoor worship service at 10:15. From 11:30 – 1:00, there will be a picnic and other festivities,
including games and activities for all ages. On Tuesday, September 14, "Shower the Atonement
Kids" will begin at 11:00 a.m. followed by a light lunch in the Gathering Place.
Please bring nursery and/or Sunday school items for the new nursery and
classrooms. Wednesday, September 15 is “Bring a Friend Day” for the mid-week
youth programs. Tours will be available and pizza will be served. On Thursday,
September 16, Atonement will host The Community Meal from 5-7 in Fellowship Hall.
About Lutheran Church of the Atonement
In
1958, Pastor Arthur Knudsen was called to establish a congregation in the –Barrington
area by the American Lutheran Church (ALC). He knocked on doors and found people interested in starting
a Lutheran church. Five families founded the congregation.
In
1961 the five acre site which is Atonement’s present location was purchased by
the ALC to build the original church building. Now known as the Knudsen Center, that structure, with its
distinctive curved roof, is used by the church as a meeting center.
As
membership grew, a new sanctuary was completed and dedicated in 1981. A lower level included a kitchen,
fellowship space, and stage.
The 2010 expansion and renovation added 16,000 square feet of modern,
functional new space to the church complex.
Today
Atonement is a vibrant Christian church that is a member of the Evangelical
Lutheran Church of America. For
