Divine Drama Bible Study

Do you see the Bible as a bits and pieces book? Do many of its passages bewilder you? Do you wonder at times how such an ancient volume can speak meaningfully to people today? If so, we invite you to “The Divine Drama” – a stimulating and transforming course that boosts biblical understanding for people who have always wanted to study the Bible but didn’t know where to start.

Regular weekly classes of Semester I are held Sunday mornings at 9:15 and 10:30 a.m. and Wednesday mornings at 9:30 a.m. Classes will proceed at a slower pace to allow time for more in-depth understanding of the material and should last through the month of July. Cost is $20 – free if you already own the study book. You may repeat sessions and you may join at any time. (Childcare available Sundays & Wednesdays only.) Contact Pastor Jane for more information.

This session of Divine Drama is drawing to a close - classes will end June 29.

Adult Small Group Community

As we move into June, congratulations for a successful year are in order to all Small Group leaders and members! The journey that began last Fall with a commitment to Biblical study, application and mutual care will soon reach a plateau during the summer months. In anticipation of continuing (or beginning!) the journey again in September, we encourage everyone to take some time during the summer to reflect on their growth as a Christ-follower and consider inquiring about the opportunities available through small group community.

Some highlights from the past year:

·        A sampling of the studies completed include the book of Romans, “The Case for Christ”, “The Lemon Tree”, “The Practice of the Presence of God”, “Hearing God”, “Too Busy Not to Pray", "Babylon, a Study of Daniel" and "Making Marriage Work"

·        Groups met on average twice monthly in member households

·        One group packaged meals in cooperation with Willow  Creek to be sent to Africa

·        Two groups of women went on weekend retreats together

·        Several groups supported the Holy Family Lutheran School by attending the fundraiser together

Atonement adult small groups are “mixed” in the sense they contain both single and married individuals. Groups form through a variety of catalysts; examples include a common interest in topical material, new friendships or simply through geographical convenience (such an arrangement saves gas also!)

The goal of personal spiritual growth is to become more like Jesus, both in our relationship with God and with the people in our lives. A small group is a great place to make progress in both!

Information on new group formation and placement will be communicated in August/September. If you have any questions in the mean time, please feel free to contact the Small Group Ministry chair, Rob Curtis at 847-726-2641.

The process of becoming a member of Atonement includes this series of 3 classes.

Babysitting is available at church to attend class.  Sign up on the Connection Card in the weekly bulletin or call Mary Williams at (847) 381-0243 x 179 for more information.

Connect 100 - Getting to Know Atonement.  This 2 hour class covers the mission, vision and values of this congregation and should help you decide whether this is the right place for you.

Connect 101 - "Understanding God's Design for Me" and Connect 201 - "Growing in Faith" are designed to help you connect fully in the life and ministry of the church. We are called to be actively serving and growing and these sessions will help find places to do both at Atonement.

Session I - Symbol Search

July 8, 9 & 10

Have you ever wondered what all those symbols in the Church mean?  Do you ever wonder about their Biblical basis and historic interpretation?  How about all those paraments and pastors stoles?  In this class, we will examine Christian symbols, their Biblical basis and historical significance.  We will also conduct a scavenger hunt of congregations in Barrington.  This is a great class for anyone who enjoys art and likes history and studying God’s Word.  Open to all confirmed members and anyone they would like to invite.  We will meet in the morning from 9:30-11:30, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.  Child care will be provided in the morning.  An identical session will be offered in the evening from 6:45-8:45.  You are free to mix and match sessions.  No cost.

Session II

The Crossways Bible Time Line

July 22, 23 & 24

We will cover 2000 years of Biblical history using the Crossways International Bible Time Line.  The bible Time Line is a great way to organize all of your Biblical knowledge!  It is also a great way to appreciate the broad sweep of the Biblical story.

This study helps you to understand the real pressures of real people in real time.  It will also give you a great way to understand the significance of all those specific names and places that we tend to pass over when reading God’s Word.  If you really want to understand Jesus, come to this class and learn how to put it all together.  If you think that you cannot do this, our confirmation students learn this as part of the Biblical competency to prepare to affirm their baptism.  We will meet in the morning from 9:30-11:30, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.  Child care will be provided in the morning.  An identical session will be provided in the evening from 6:45-8:45.  You are free to mix and match.  Cost is $10.  The class is open to all confirmed adults and anyone they would like to invite.
