As part of an ecumenical effort that began in December 2000 to
more fully support faithful prayer for the success of non-violent means to
achieve just and lasting Mideast peace, participating churches in Illinois hold
similar services on the 15th of every month. In this way, we support both Israelis and
Palestinians by taking part in a churchwide effort. Visit this site to learn more.
At Atonement, the service consists of reading from the Bible,
music, prayer, and sharing of timely information. It highlights current conditions and focuses
on individuals and groups that either reside in or regularly visit the Middle
East. Post-service programs are
scheduled to fulfill a goal of raising awareness and fostering mutual
understanding. They feature talks or video
accounts by people of all three major Abrahamic faiths and offer informative
perspectives on a variety of subjects related to the Mideast conflict. Through coming together in this way, those
attending the prayer services gain increased knowledge of the reality that in
the U.S. and around the world, groups and individual members of those faiths
steadfastly work together in dedicated efforts toward peace.
Atonement members welcome area residents and those from other
communities to join them in attending this service of prayers for peace and
healing, as well as the post-service programs. Participants in the service focus their prayers on the Christian
communities in Jerusalem; all those who are suffering in the Holy Land,
regardless of their citizenship, faith, and culture; and non-violent efforts to
achieve Mideast and global peace.
All of these services at Atonement begin at 7:30 and last
approximately an hour. Special
post-service programs may extend that time by an additional hour, in order to
include opportunities for discussion and fellowship. Elsewhere on this site, monthly event details
are provided on the day of the service, and information may be obtained ahead
of that time by calling the church office at (847) 381-0243.
